Small Supports Planning Sheet

A practical planning tool to help early childhood educators look closely at one difficult part of the day and identify one small support that may make the moment feel more manageable.

You do not always need a complete classroom overhaul. Sometimes one thoughtful support can change the rhythm of the moment.

Why this resource matters

Small changes can create meaningful support.

Some parts of the classroom day feel harder than others. A transition may become rushed. A child may have difficulty joining an activity. Cleanup may take longer than expected. The teaching team may feel unsure about what to try next.

The Small Supports Planning Sheet helps educators slow down and look at one moment more closely. Instead of trying to change everything at once, the tool helps you identify what may be getting in the way and choose one practical support to try.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is to make the moment a little clearer, calmer, more predictable, or more connected.

Types of support

Look for the smallest change that may help.

A support does not have to be complicated. It may be one change to the environment, a visual reminder, different language, or stronger adult connection.

1

Environmental Support

Adjust the space, reduce distractions, move materials, create a defined area, or make the next step easier to access.

2

Visual Support

Add a picture, sequence, visual schedule, reminder card, example, or cue that helps children understand what comes next.

3

Language Support

Use fewer words, repeat a calm phrase, give one direction at a time, or offer a clear and manageable choice.

4

Relationship Support

Offer reassurance, model the next step, stay close, acknowledge effort, or help a child regulate before expecting participation.

How to use the sheet

Focus on one difficult moment.

The worksheet helps you move from frustration to reflection and from reflection to one practical next step.

01

Name the moment.

Choose one routine, transition, activity, interaction, or part of the day that feels difficult or unsettled.

02

Notice what is happening.

Think about what children are doing, what adults are doing, what happens before the moment, and where the difficulty begins.

03

Choose one small support.

Select an environmental, visual, language, routine-based, or relationship-centered support to try.

04

Watch for one small change.

Notice whether the moment becomes calmer, clearer, more connected, or easier for children and adults to manage.
