Making Space for the People Who Care for Everyone Else

Early childhood professionals are often the people holding everything together.

They care for children, support families, guide teams, solve problems, manage competing responsibilities, and continue showing up—even when they are carrying more than others can see.

That is one reason I am honored to present at the Illinois AEYC Self-Care Virtual Summit on June 30, 2026.

My session is titled:

Heart Work, Heavy Work: Protecting Your Peace in Early Childhood

Early childhood work is deeply meaningful. Many of us entered this field because we care about children, families, educators, and the difference strong early learning experiences can make.

But meaningful work can still feel heavy.

Caring deeply does not make us immune to stress, exhaustion, frustration, or emotional overload. In fact, the heart we bring to this work can sometimes make it difficult to recognize when we are carrying too much.

We may feel guilty for setting boundaries.

We may continue saying yes when we need space.

We may become so focused on supporting everyone else that we lose connection with our own needs, purpose, and well-being.

This session is not about adding another responsibility to an already full list. It is about creating room to pause.

Together, we will reflect on the emotional realities of the field and explore practical ways to protect our peace, practice healthy boundaries, reconnect with purpose, and care for ourselves without guilt.

Self-care should not only happen after we are already overwhelmed. It can also look like recognizing our limits, communicating clearly, asking for support, and making intentional choices before we reach the point of exhaustion.

The professionals who care for children and families deserve support too.

I am grateful for the opportunity to join this important conversation and create a space where early childhood professionals can reflect honestly, feel seen, and leave with practical next steps.
